Suggested Checks

Afterschoolcare.co.uk is not a Recruitment Agency as defined by the Employment Agencies Act 1973 and therefore not covered by the Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses Regulation of 2003.

We do not carry out searches or checks on the carers registering their details on our website.

Families are always recommended to check and verify the information that they are given by the carer.

We would recommend contacting at least 2 referees - names and details provided by the carer.

We would also recommend verifying their identity - asking to see 2 documents - passport or driving licence and a bank statement showing their address.

If you are asking a carer to pick up children using their car, then you should ask to see a driving licence and check that their insurance policy allows for this use.

Ask to see the carer's most recent CRB disclosure or see below for how to go about obtaining an up to date check.

CRB: About Criminal Record Checks (CRB) disclosures

If a person is convicted of an offence they can, after a certain period of time, not disclose this conviction when asked by an employer. If the job applied for is to work with children, vulnerable adults or in certain regulated positions of trust however the applicant must disclose this information no matter how long ago the conviction. These situations are exemptions to the rehabilitation of offenders Act 1974 and a CRB disclosure will be required. On receipt of a disclosure the employer can make an informed decision on the suitability of the person for that job. There are three different levels of criminal record checks. Basic CRB check: These are only available through DisclosureScotland.co.uk Standard CRB Check Also referred to as a Standard Disclosure. These are primarily for posts that involve working with children or vulnerable adults. Standard checks may also be issued for people entering certain professions, such as members of the legal and accountancy professions. The Standard check contains details of all convictions held on the PNC including current and 'spent' convictions as well as details of any cautions, reprimands or final warnings. If a position involves working with children, the CRB check will indicate whether information is held on three government lists of those who are banned from working with children or the vulnerable.

Enhanced CRB Check: Also referred to as an Enhanced Disclosure. These are for posts that involve a far greater degree of contact with children or vulnerable adults. In general the type of work will involve regularly caring for, supervising, training or being in sole charge of such people. Examples include a Teacher, Scout or Guide leader. Enhanced checks are also issued for certain statutory purposes such as gaming and lottery licences. This level of check involves an additional level of check to those carried out for the Standard CRB check - a check on local police records. Where local police records contain additional information that may be relevant to the post the applicant is being considered for, the Chief Officer of police may release information for inclusion in an Enhanced check. Exceptionally, and in a very small number of circumstances (typically to protect the integrity of current police investigations), additional information may be sent under separate cover to the Countersignatory and should not be revealed to the applicant.

Carers are not entitled to apply for a Criminal Record Check but their Individual employer can. This must be done through a registered umbrella body of the Criminal Records Bureau such as personnelchecks.co.uk. Individual employers can not apply direct to the Criminal Records Bureau, Personnel Checks work in conjunction with the CRB and if you would like to discuss an application for a Carer CRB check ring us now on 01254 355688.

Parents have no legal requirement to obtain a disclosure certificate. The Enhanced level of CRB check, is the highest level of police check and is undertaken for people working with children such as Carers who are employed through an agency. It highlights people unsuitable for working with children by checking to see if they have a criminal record.
